The largest ferries in the world, luxurious cruisers, majestic windjammers and the fastest sailing yachts right in the city center create the unmistakable flair of the state capital. Here, sea and beach, vacation paradise, and big city merge into a unique experience. Every day, thousands of Norwegians and Swedes come on the major ferry lines to the "port with city center and shopping center" .
Kiel: the most attractive and safest city destination
The 2021 City Travel Study by DTV, ETI and St. Elmo's Tourismusmarketing examined 150 European cities, including over 100 German cities, with regard to the impact of COVID-19 on city trips.
Business trips have declined, while domestic city trips in Germany are booming. Kiel benefits from its green and maritime orientation, which makes it a "green/blue city".
Kiel achieved 1st place in the "Green/Blue Cities" category and 16th place overall. This is a result of increased interest in the sea, sightseeing and alternative modes of transportation during the pandemic.
Kiel is perceived as a safe destination and achieved 4th place overall, behind Hamburg, Bremen and Munich. European cities outside Germany did not make it into the top ten. Kiel is an outstanding destination!
Kiel is the starting point for many tourists to explore the country and the Baltic Sea or to enjoy culture. Many are attracted by the international Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the mega event Kieler Woche in the summer.
In addition, there are also unmistakable sights such as the "rush hour" at the lock of the Kiel Canal or the City Beach in Falckenstein. All of this can only be seen in Kiel. We are proud of this and the tourism team sells this "unmistakable product Kiel" with commitment and passion.
