Kiel says JO!
Official backing for Kiel as a host city: the DOSB is putting Munich and Kiel forward as joint candidates for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Olympic and Paralympic Games! Following the resounding ‘YES!’ in the April referendum (63.9 per cent in favour), the Kiel Fjord is now entering the international phase as a confirmed host for the sailing events.
The next major milestone on the timetable: the Strategic Dialogue with the IOC will begin in March 2027, ahead of the final decision in 2029!
The Olympics as a catalyst for Kiel.

Germany is bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044 – and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has made its choice: Munich is entering the international race as Germany’s candidate city – and has Kiel on board as a permanent partner for the sailing competitions! This means one thing is certain: if Germany is awarded the Games by the IOC, the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events will be held on the Kiel Fjord.
To highlight the enormous opportunities for the region – from infrastructure to tourism – the Kiel Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), the Kiel Yacht Club and numerous partners from business, academia and society launched the ‘In Kiel, we say JO!’ campaign. Together, we sent out a strong, positive signal from our sports-loving region, which played a key role in the positive outcome of the referendum.”
