With its diverse range of stores, cafés and restaurants, Kiel's longest covered shopping street is a popular destination for shopaholics and city strollers. This is where tradition meets modernity, small boutiques meet specialist stores. Once served by streetcar line 4, Holtenauer Straße is still well served by public transport today. With its history, the street invites you to stroll and linger. Here you will find a mosaic of culture, gastronomy, shopping, working and living.

Welcome to the Holtenauer Straße district management team!
As a special district center, Holtenauer Strasse comprises around 150 retail businesses with a very high proportion of individual, owner-managed stores as well as various catering and cultural businesses (art house cinemas, theaters, galleries) and a large number of service providers.
The voluntary association "die Holtenauer e.V." aims to increase the overall attractiveness of the Holtenauer Strasse district in the long term. This is promoted in particular by increasing the quality of life in the street, making the Holtenauer experience more attractive and organizing joint events, increasing communication between the stakeholders and initiating measures to protect the environment.

Kiel blossoms! on April 28, 2024
The spring event"Kiel blossoms!" from 27 - 28 April 2024 immersed Kiel's city centre and Holtenauer Straße in a sea of flowers and welcomed spring with a colorful program of craft activities and outdoor sports activities.
Holtenauer Straße also blossomed on Sunday when the shops were open and invited people to linger. In addition to strolling and shopping on the popular promenade, there was a colorful program for the whole family. Whether you like dancing, have always wanted to try out unicycling or enjoy glitter tattoos, you'll find what you're looking for on Holtenauer Strasse! Musical accompaniment was provided by the band Knuppene - Folk aus Nord and Winnie W. Nuehl.
Kiel transshipment on March 03, 2024
Visitors were taken on a journey through time, in which former mayor Asmus Bremer and his wife were brought back to life. There was plenty for young and old to discover. Varied live music, storytellers and various performances rounded off the program of the popular event. Kiel's stores opened their doors on Sunday from 13:00 - 18:00 under the motto "I feel Kiel" and invited shoppers to go on an extensive Sunday shopping tour.
In Holtenauer Straße, Asmus-Bremer and his entourage were ceremoniously welcomed at the Ansgarkirche church and continued on their way through the street. A medieval picture trail in cooperation with the Heiligengeist day care center was on display in selected shop windows throughout the week. There were medieval stories for the little ones at two locations, performed by the Märchen Förderverein e.V. The grown-ups didn't miss out either and were able to listen to thriller readings by the Krimi Kartell under Kurt Geisler. The highlight was a fire show by the duo Fördefeuer, which made the visitors' eyes light up.
Kiel Sea of Lights on November 05, 2023
On the occasion of the Kieler Lichtermeer 2023, the city was transformed into a magical sea of lights. Holtenauer Straße became an integral part of the event for the first time. Simultaneously with the Sunday opening, Holtenauer Strasse lit up with impressive light installations and building projections at three key points, creating an unforgettable experience.
In addition to regional musical accompaniment by artist Yonatan Pandelaki on the corner of Esmarchstrasse at nordlykk, the illuminated shop windows led the way along Holtenauer Strasse like a string of lights. The street became a place of wonder and invited visitors to linger and stroll. The Ansgarkirche church was also lit up in bright colors in the afternoon.
As darkness fell, a video mapping with sound effects could be admired. Kiel's sea of lights in Holtenauer Straße was rounded off by two spectacular fire shows on the Ansgarkirche piazza, performed by the Weltentor duo.
Development goals and need for action
Not in the city center but close to the center, Holtenauer Straße is a highlight of a visit to Kiel. Kiel-Marketing e.V. and Holtenauer e.V. would like to intensify their cooperation for the special district center (BSTZ) Holtenauer Straße in the future.
The structure of Kiel-Marketing as the city and city management of the state capital of Kiel is to be used to strengthen neighbourhood management for the district, promote the digitalization of the local economy and achieve mutual synergy effects. Holtenau and Kiel-Marketing see this as a building block for the successful implementation of the district-related goals from the Retail and Centre Concept 2020 (EZK) and the federal funding program "Sustainable Inner Cities and Centres" (ZIZ).
In the long term, a profiling concept will be developed to ensure that Kiel's special district remains well positioned in the future. To this end, the neighborhood community will be strengthened in its cooperation and highlights will be used to make it more attractive.
